Birmingham Jewellery Quarter

The world famous Jewellery Quarter, the heart of the Birmingham Jewellery manufacturing industry, with over 200 years of history is the focal point of the UK jewellery manufacturing and retail industry.

With the influx of gold to the UK in the 19th century from the US and Australian gold rush, in addition to Birmingham prospering from the growing industrial revolution bringing a huge rise in demand for gold jewellery, the Hockley area of Birmingham quickly developed into a jewellery manufacturing hub, with thousands of small workshops and independent businesses specialising in each intricate area of manufacturing process, the area quickly established a recognition for its quality of craftsmanship and skilled residents. The once predominantly residential buildings were actively converted to workshops to accommodate the growing jewellery businesses and demand. By the early 20th century, up to 20,000 people were employed in the area.

Post war Britain marked a decline in demand and the Jewellery industry began to decline.  Today there remains around 4,000 people working in the industry around the various streets of the Jewellery Quarter and the jewellery quarter has reinvented itself and is now a dense mix of jewellery shops offering a dizzying array of bespoke jewellery and related accessories, capitalising on Birmingham new found success and emerging tourism industry.  The area is now also a popular base for many creative companies, with many new digital and technology businesses now choosing to make the jewellery quarter their home.

The Jewellery quarter is often identified by the iconic Chamberlain Clock, with the main streets of the jewellery quarter stretching away from this central point. Dozens of retail outlets are now open to the public within a short walk of the city centre.  Most shops feature their own area of specialism, from wedding rings and watches to physical gold sales and precious stones.  This heavy mix of competition helps create very competitive pricing and continues to draw customers from around the world on a daily basis.
